Modified small bowel CT (MBCT) for evaluating sub-acute and chronic conditions affecting the small bowel: a low radiation-dose, unenhanced CT protocol
نویسندگان
چکیده
Modified Small Bowel CT (MBCT) is a low-dose CT method of evaluating chronic conditions affecting the small bowel. Due to ingestion of hyperdense oral contrast, there is resultant high contrast resolution between the bowel lumen, bowel wall and surroundings. This technique can be used in follow-up of chronic conditions affecting the small bowel, including Crohn’s disease, postoperative bowel leaks and recurrent small bowel obstructions due to strictures and small bowel luminal growths. MBCT is easy and comfortable for the patient to undergo, takes a very short time to acquire images and allows reconstruction of images in any plane by the radiologist during post-processing.

Low-Radiation-Dose Modified Small Bowel CT for Evaluation of Recurrent Crohn's Disease
Crohn's disease affects any part of the GI tract, commonly the terminal ileum. To decrease radiation exposure we developed a low-radiation-dose unenhanced CT (modified small Bowel CT, MBCT) to evaluate the small bowel using hyperdense oral contrast. Technique. MBCT was investigated in patients with pathologically proven Crohn's disease presenting with new symptoms from recurrent inflammation or...
متن کاملComparison of PET/CT and CT-based tumor delineation and its effects on the radiation treatment planning for non-small cell lung cancer
Introduction: Tumor volume delineation is the most important step in the radiation treatment planning. In this study the impact of PET/CT data on the tumor delineation precision of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) was investigated. Methods: PET/CT images of 20 patients with primary NSCLC were obtained and imported to the treatment planning system for im...
متن کاملSmall Bowel Obstruction Caused by the Ingestion of a Wooden Toothpick: The CT findings and a Literature Review
We present a case in which the accidental ingestion of a toothpick caused duodenal perforation and small intestinal obstruction. A 58-year-old man visited our emergency room with acute abdominal pain. Computed tomography (CT) showed obstructive ileus as well as a foreign body penetrating the duodenum, which was identified as a toothpick and removed endoscopically. Unenhanced CT was superior in ...

Background: In this study, we explored the relationship between neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and grade 3 or higher treatment related small bowel toxicity and treatment outcome of patients with rectal cancer undergoing capecitabine and concurrent intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). Materials and Methods: From the year of 2012 to 2013, 117 rectal cancer patients who ...
متن کاملMR imaging of the small bowel – technique and current applications
Increased importance has been placed on evaluating small bowel disease to guide management in often chronic conditions such as Crohn’s disease. Imaging of the small bowel has always played a key role in diagnosis and decision making. Traditionally, fluoroscopic studies such as barium follow through and small bowel enteroclysis have been used. More recently, the gold standard of evaluating the s...
